LIFE designed : Burning your boat

Recently, I have been going through old blog posts over at my very old domain, Design Thoughts Blog. I have years of archived articles and information, and I am trying to get it all organized ( a BIG task) I came across this post this morning, and once it again, it struck a deep chord. One that i had forgotten about…read on, and you will see what I mean ! Happy Wednesday!
________ March 5th 2012_____

Sometimes, on my search for the best design inspired post, something grabs me completely un-related to Interior Design, but completely related to the design of ME, of WHO I AM….WOW!!  A friend of mine,Lisa..posted a VERY POWERFUL article, written by Danielle LaPorte, that not only took my breath away, but grabbed a hold of my shoulders and SHOOK me to the bone.  In the Article, Danielle speaks of of her friend Pasha, and a mythical story she had been told, read below:

“There’s a story my friend Pasha told me about about a mythic band of magic-loving Irish folk. Feeling the call for newness, they would forge out to settle on a new island. Necessarily, they would make the journey by ship. When they arrived to their next land they would unpack — and then promptly burn their boats.
No desire to go back. Focused forward. New journey, new way of getting there, new results.
Usually we want to do more of what got us to where we are. There is safety in repetition. Familiarity, best practices, proven techniques. I think the Bright Future craves more daring from us.”

OH MY GOODNESS…I read this, and my breath was taken away. I realize this wont be everyone’s first reaction to it, but can you imagine, just imagine, if after you make decisions, no matter what they are…you BURN YOUR BOAT, never turning back, never second guessing, never worrying?? or maybe that’s already how you live your life, and if it is, that is an amazing way to do it! So I will pose the same question to you as she poses to her readers…
What Boat do you need to burn?”
My answer?
I am burning the boat that carries my immediate need for answers. Needing to know, not only how my story ends, but about every detail in every stone of the path that will lead me there..needing to know what my next bright step of success is going to be. I am lighting the match..watching it burn!!!
Chills, I tell ya!! CHILLS!!!
A writing also from Danielle LaPorte
a testimony to the future
I bless the path that showed itself to me
astute, blind, courageous, clever, faithfully
I forged and floated
to now.
I testify to the utility of all that was then.
I testify to where I now stand: I AM here.
I testify to my capacity to craft
new ways of getting where I want to go.
I am the journey.
I am the path.
I am the destination.
SO PLEASE!!! tell me!! What boat do YOU need to burn!!!??!!

Nashville Symphony Showhouse

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Forest Home media, to join a wonderful, talented group of Bloggers and designers, to be among the first, to tour the brand new Nashville Symphony Showhouse, and enjoy an invitation only garden party. I desperately want to show you every last photo I took, however, I just found out that all photos taken with an Iphone, don’t transfer to WordPress the right way!! ( say What!??) so to see every last drop of Showhouse goodness, hop over to my Instagram @designThoughtsInteriors ( while you do that, I will continue to take full, deep breaths over the amount of hours it has taken me to determine that I held my iPhone the wrong way!)

Porch Swing Bed

Last October, right before I left for #blogtourcali I installed a beautiful Custom Porch Swing Bed in Brentwood, TN. I was so busy when I returned, that I totally forgot to share it with you! I was so happy with how it turned out! I collaborated with Good Wood Nashville, to be sure the design and hanging possibilities were sound, and would withhold the jumping and swinging of (2) kids under the age of 10.  It worked beautifully, and I am happy to report 8 month later, it is still in beautiful condition and working great!! Take a look at the progress!

Bedding and pillows are from West Elm. I designed the Porch Swing bed to be a twin. Just enough space for both of my clients grandchildren to sleep there!
