"Grow House Grow"

May 29, 2012 Comment : 1

Hi !!  I hope you are all reading this feeling relaxed  from the 3 day weekend!! I have ( too many) pictures of Liam at our tiny little hometown parade to share ( later). When I looked at them, I laughed at how I can take 300 of the exact same pose, and think every single one is a keeper, you will get a chance to see those amazing pics another day!!

Last week I wrote about my trip into the city for ICFF ( International Contemporary Furniture Fair)
Although I spent most of my time gazing at the beautiful jungles of the Flower District, I did spend a little time in the actual show, and met some amazing people!!
I was almost ready to leave the show, when I spotted some bright wallcovering in the back, in a little booth. I decided to take one last peek before I left, and I am so glad I did. The booth belonged to  “Grow House Grow“, a Brooklyn based company, that was started by owner and designer, Katie Deedy.  As I walked up, Katie’s sales assistant immediately said hi ( they were so nice) and started telling me the story of how Katie’s business was born. As soon as her sales person told me that Katie’s mom was a  story teller, it clicked, I had read about Katie, and Grow House Grow, in one of my O magazines!! No wonder I was so drawn to them!!
Each of her pieces tells a story, like her latest collection called Far Rockaway.  I asked Katie to send me a few of her favorite patterns, and here they are. The first, Tackapousha in color: Mermaid. ( see her thought behind this pattern, below)
“Today, the Rockaways’ history isn’t easy to detect–nearly two centuries of fires, redevelopment and erosion have left the landscape devoid of its former grandeur. Our Tackapousha pattern, with its arrow motif and graceful lines, aims to bridge the wild beaches of Tackapousha’s 17th century home with the glamor of Far Rockaway’s golden age.”

I love the color, and as you already know from this previous post, I am arrow obsessed, so this happens to also be my favorite!!

The next, is the pattern she calls, “Captain Smith”, named after famous Titanic captain, Captain, John Smith…here are a few snippets of the meaning behind this wallpaper…

“Edward John Smith’s final evening as captain of the world’s largest sea vessel was an undeniably sensational one. As the Titanic sank in those early hours on April 15, 1912, Captain Smith was lost and his final actions remain unknown.”
……
“The rare Grimpoteuthis, also known as the Dumbo Octopus, is one such visitor to the ship’s wreckage. I suspect the rest of Titanic’s community is equally refined: elegant jellyfish, swarthy squid, some unusual, opulent sea fauna. It is in this dreamy, unhurried company Captain Smith eternally rests.”

Shown in color: Promenade
Then, there is  Ms. Ward in color: Mantis. I love this quirky print! I can absolutely see designers like, Emily Henderson, and well..me.. ha!  using this, and rocking it!!  See the story behind this design, here.

This design is called Ms.Treat, named after American born naturalist, Mary Treat, who was devoted to the understanding of Carnivorous plants! See full story, here.

There are so many things that I love about this wallpaper, this company, this designer ( when you meet Katie in real life, you just feel like you could be friends, don’t you LOVE that?!) !! Each piece is so thoughtfully crafted, and you all know how I feel about the “MEANING” behind design. Grow House Grow, has figured out the perfect formula of beautiful design, mixed with wonderful meaning!! Also, my heart always skips a beat when I meet another mom who is making it all work! I know its not easy, and its so inspiring.
( Did I mention that at the show, we talked for so long about how much we loved being mamas of 2.5 yr olds..well, and the tantrums we are enduring…that I forgot to take pictures!!)  Not only is her wallpaper making headlines (see her work in Dwell, O Magazine, Country Living, & House Beautiful just to name drop a few) Grow House Grow, is well..growing…she now offers fabrics ( see the whole line here and don’t even get me started how much I am OBSESSING over “Massapeag in color Mint. see below) and if Wallpaper and Fabric isn’t enough, she has also just added tile! See a few pictures below!
These tiles are 100% natural, and suitable for indoor/Outdoor floor and wall!!!
Her fabric!! “Massapeag” in color: Mint
I asked Katie about her price point. Wallpaper rolls, are $180 per. The great thing about her living and working in Brooklyn..she gets that people have Small spaces! Not everyone needs an entire roll!! So not only can you buy it by the sheet, you can also buy a small sample. When I asked her about the swatches, this is what she told me:
(photo via House Beautiful)
“As for the swatches…we not only sell sheets of all of our wallpapers (they are 27″ wide by 36” long, and are perfect for framing as art or for craft projects), we also sell our fabrics by the strike off (26″ x 26″) or smaller swatch (6″ x 6″).  It’s really easy to do through the website.  The fabric strike offs are particularly nice for making cushions or pillows.”
Don’t you LOVE that!! Such a great idea to frame and hang!!  Thank you, Katie, for showing other women that you CAN make your dreams come true, yes, it will take hard work, but to LOVE what you are doing, is a goal we should all strive for 😉
Would you like to “follow” Katie in a non stalker way?? Here ya go!! Twitter  Facebook
Enjoy your Tuesday, which is probably more like everyone’s Monday with the long weekend, and even better yet, enjoy your short week!!!
Love, Kim
