Non-toxic traditions ( Mommy Post)

April 22, 2011 Leave a Comment

Happy Earth Day!!!  Happy Good Friday, Happy Passover and Happy Easter ( did I miss any?)

Traditions were always a HUGE part of my family growing up! Even well into our teens, if something changed at a holiday, you could hear my sister and I saying “Awww, but its tradition!!!” we got this this from both parents, and its so important to G and I to create our own traditions for our little family. While coloring Easter Eggs is kind of a given at Easter, we are trying to be conscious about what we feed L and what he is around .We are not crazy about every single thing,(Obviously..Kool aid and Jello ARE NOT natural ha) but if we can do it in a healthier way, we do.  SOOO, that being said, below is my shopping list for today! What is it for? Read on and see if you can guess..(except I just told you we were coloring Easter Eggs, but just pretend you DID NOT read that part)

1 can of Organic Beets

1 bag of Frozen Blueberry’s

1 jar of Turmeric

1 box of Cherry Jello

1 packet of orange Kool-Aid

1 jar of Paprika ( actually I already have this, but wanted you to see another ingredient )

After reading this list, if you guessed that I am buying these ingredients to make my own NON-TOXIC Easter Egg Dye..you would be CORRECT!!!!! (or you may have figured it out above when I wrote that we would be coloring Easter Eggs) how fun right?? Using all natural ingredients, G, L, and I are going to color Easter Eggs tomorrow morning.  I have high hopes that these will produce beautiful eggs, and the best part, who cares if Liam ends up with a little color in his mouth!!(I’m just saying..he’s a toddler, EVERYTHING goes in his mouth lately) I was going to wait to post this until AFTER we colored the eggs, but thought YOU may want to try it too!!  Stay tuned tomorrow for a look at how they turned out!!

Here is how you do it!!!

Jello/Kool-Aid (What ever color you pick)

Boil 2 cups of water with one TBSP of Vinegar
Add  1 TBSP of Jello or Kool-aid
Simmer 15 mins- let cool, dip eggs..may have to soak for up to 15 mins

Blueberries   (Purple)

Boil 2 cups of water with 1 TBSP of Vinegar
Add  1/2 Cup  of Frozen Blueberries let simmer 15 mins

Hoping OUR E.Eggs will look this great!!
Strain over mug then dunk those eggies!!

Turmeric (yellow)

Boil 2 cups of water with 1 TBSP of Vinegar
Add  2 TBSP of Turmeric Simmer 15 mins- let cool, dip eggs..may have to soak for up to 15 mins

Paprika- (Orange)

Boil 2 cups of water with one TBSP of Vinegar
Add  2 TBSP of Paparika
Simmer 15 mins- let cool, dip eggs..may have to soak for up to 15 mins

I have never done this before, probably because L was too little last year, and also because I have become so much more conscious since I have become a mom…I love finding things that can be done naturally!! Lets see if it works!!!

Happy Friday!!
